This winter and spring Blossom & Root is offering a series sewing classes, from absolute beginner to advanced with fun and personalized projects. All sewing classes are limited to 6 people per class, and are located in Damariscotta, Maine.
Have you wanted to learn how to sew? This winter is a good time to start!
All classes are from 10am – 11am. Open studio is from 11- 12pm.
Learn to Sew Class & Open Studio – Absolute Beginner
Dec 1st & Jan 18th – Pillowcase or Draw String Bag – Learn the basics of how to use a sewing machine.
Dec 8th & Jan 24th – 2D Stuffed Animal – Learn how to sew curved lines and hand-sew a closure.
Dec 15th & Jan 31st – 2D Purse – Learn how to use a basic pattern and install a liner. We will also introduce pleats and discuss different fabrics and choosing the right fabric for the project.
$30 per student
$10 materials fee or BYO material

Learn to Sew Class & Open Studio – Beginner
Jan 5th & Feb 7th – 3D with 2 zippers – Great first zipper project! We will talk about general patterns: good, bad, interpretations, and how to cut them out. We also will discuss the different types of zippers, and their uses.
Jan 12th & Feb 28th – Dress or skirt (Adult or Child) – We will talk about fitting and altering patterns and will install an invisible zipper.
Jan 26th March 7th – Dress Pants – This is a slightly more complicated zipper installation than the previous two zipper projects. Learn how to fit and alter the patter, if needed, and how to sew an invisible hem.

Learn to Sew Class & Open Studio – Intermediate
In this 3-day class we will make a pea coat. We will get through this project together but expect to work on half of this project at home.
Jan 22nd & March 8th – Let’s go shopping! – Unless you already have the fabric that you want to use, let’s meet up to choose the right fabric for you. This session will be in the Lewiston area, so plan for an all-day excursion. Meet us there, or we can plan to carpool.
Feb 2nd & March 14th – Patterns, sewing techniques, alterations and fitting
Feb 9th & March 21st – Sleeves & closures
Feb 23rd & March 28th – Finishing touches

Learn to Sew Class & Open Studio – Advanced
Want to create your own pattern, make upcycled clothing, or something special? Perhaps make your own wedding dress, suit, or costume? Do you find lining up the stripes and plaids challenging? Let’s do it! We will get through this project together but expect to work on at least half of this project at home.

How to Grow Salad Greens… and Other Greens… in the Middle of Winter! - Workshop
We will discuss cold-hearty plants and what conditions they require to feed you all winter long. Students will have the opportunity to start their kit in class and take it home.

Beginner Landscape Design - Workshop
This course is intended for individuals to develop a basic design for their own garden or landscape. We will discuss different styles, hardscaping, terrain, sun exposure, proper plant placement, and the elements of a good design.

Vegetable Garden on Ledge & Other Hard Surfaces - Class
Would you like to grow a vegetable garden, but your ideal spot is on ledge? Are you uncertain about raised beds as a solution? If so, then this is the class for you! Learn how to build your bountiful garden using sustainable, low-cost, materials.

We will discuss shade-loving plants, their growing conditions, and the right plant in the right place.

Everblooming and Pollinator Garden - Class
An everblooming garden in Maine provides colorful interest from April thru November! While we are talking about these beautiful bloomers, we will also discuss which plants provide season-long food for our pollinator friends.
April 9th from 10am – 11am & April 11th from 11am - Noon

Landscape Design – Workshop
If you are committed to designing your own landscape, then this is the class for you! Day 1, 3, and 4 will be inside. Day 2 we will visit student’s sites to talk about their space to be landscaped. You will create a detailed design and a plant list so that you can order your supplies and be well prepared for an April/May installation!
Lunch and refreshments provided for days 1, 3, and 4. BYO lunch for day 2.

Vegetable Garden on Ledge & Other Hard Surfaces - Workshop
Would you like to grow a vegetable garden, but your ideal spot is on ledge? Are you uncertain about raised beds and potted plants as a solution? If so, then this is the class for you!
